Boxelder Road Trip to the Carpenters Training Institute in Sioux Falls, SD
Boxelder lead instructor Steve Chambers accompanied his students on a three-day road trip across the state of South Dakota to visit the UBC training center in Sioux Falls.
The group traveled six hours each way on this trip! They had a chance to connect the dots between the projects they do on campus and the world of commercial carpentry. Students also got to work with UBC apprentices and instructors building concrete forms.
Boxelder graduate Maurice Mfumbe, who is a current apprentice, talked to them about what being in the carpentry apprenticeship program is like. In the evenings, they stayed at a hotel and got to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings and HuHot Mongolian Grill. When they got back to Boxelder, they had a much better idea about what it means to be a UBC carpenter apprentice!
A few weeks later, during a National Apprenticeship Week event, three of Steve’s students joined the Union and got jobs right away, in nearby Rapid City!
